Jay Sweeney

Jay Sweeney, VMD

Board Advisor

Dr. Jay Sweeney is a world-renowned expert in marine
mammal medicine. His interest in the oceans was born from his surfer roots in La Jolla, California and whetted by his mother, a marine biologist at Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

Dr. Sweeney began his veterinary career working with SeaWorld and the US Navy’s Marine Mammal Program, and he went on to provide veterinary support to countless marine mammal facilities around the world through his international consulting practice.

As veterinary consultant to Marineland of the Pacific, Dr. Sweeney observed the simple interactions then allowed between dolphins and park guests, noting beneficial aspects for both animals and people. Along with veterinary consulting partner Dr. Rae Stone, Dr. Sweeney developed Dolphin Quest in 1988, which now operates two interactive facilities in Hawaii and one in Bermuda.

Dr. Sweeney is a lecturer on marine mammal medicine at veterinary universities and colleges, author of more than 100 scientific articles, and an active member of numerous professional veterinary associations. He serves as chairman of the Veterinary Committee of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, and is a field veterinarian for the Sarasota Dolphin Research Project, the world’s longest-running study of a wild dolphin population.
